Journaling

Hey y’all so for this Wellness Wednesday, let’s talk about journaling. I am actually new to journaling. I kept a diary for a bit when I was a tween (I mean, what girl didn’t), but I never really got into that, and so when journaling really started becoming popular, I was iffy about it. Well, I am here to tell you that I am ready to give it a shot!

You may be wondering, what made me change my mind about journaling. First, as a psychology major, I try to keep up with things related to mental health, so that means anything new as far as ways to help improve your mental health, ways to relax, ways to rewire your brain in a positive way, I want to hear about it and learn about it. Journaling is no different, especially since there are many journals that guide you through the process and only take a few minutes out of each day. Studies are showing that journaling has a positive impact on reducing stress, helping you to let go of anxieties, and even rewiring your brain to think in a more positive manner. I mean, with all of that going for it, I figure, a little more positivity can never hurt!

I went ahead and bought two very different journals to get started. The first is a two minute morning journal. It’s designed to help you “win every day” and one of the ways it does that is by having you write down something you’re letting go of today. You also write what you’re grateful for, every single morning when you get up. They say, the more specific the better, and here’s where the sign behind that comes into play. When we focus on things we are lacking in our lives, we become a little more down about things, especially when bad stuff happens, and we forget all the great things we have. By putting those thoughts in your head first thing in the morning, you’re making your brain think about positive things and keeping it at the forefront of your mind right at the start of your day, which will help you have a more positive and upbeat attitude about things in the future, even if your day takes a turn for the bad. The second journal is a bit different in that it has several journeys for you to go on, thus providing journaling in different areas for your life for a long time. There’s a spiritual, achievement, humanitarian, mending fences, self-discovery, and more. I figured, that is definitely something worth exploring, even if you’re pretty certain you know who you are and what you believe or what you want out of life, taking a deeper look could help clarify some things for you.

So give journaling a try, if it’s not for you, no harm done, but if you find it helps you out in any way, even if it’s just giving you some time to sit down and unwind, then it was definitely worth it.

Take On Extra Work

I know, I know, y’all were not expecting me to suggest adding even more work onto your already full plates, but that’s exactly what this weekly tip is about. Taking on extra work in all areas of your life shows not only initiative, but it also shows a desire to get ahead and to make changes in your life.

So what does this take on extra work mean exactly? It could mean anything you want it to. For some, it’s asking for more responsibility at work, for others it could mean pitching in with household chores more. Take things on slowly, and see what you reap from it. You’ll never regret working hard.

Shopping Tips

Hey y’all, any shoppers out there? I’m one, I like to shop, and I especially like to shop when I feel a bit stressed out. I mean, they don’t call it retail therapy for no reason 🙂 But too much shopping can definitely be not good for the budgeting, and as someone who is trying to pay off her student loans early, not to mention start saving for retirement, budgeting is super important. So for this week’s tip, let’s go into some shopping tips.

Do I need or do I want? This is a big question I ask myself before purchasing anything in a store or online. Certain things have to be purchased, and I am also not saying not to buy anything that you want, and only to buy stuff you need, because that’s no fun. But ask yourself this question, along with when will I wear/use this? I found a beautiful dress this past weekend when I was out at a store, and I truly wanted it, but I for the life of me, could not think of an instance when I would wear it. I have nothing coming up that would require this dress, and while it was really pretty, I ultimately decided that I would rather have the money than have a dress hanging in my closet for who knows how long without an occasion for it. However, I also found something else for my room that I could easily picture where it was and what it would be used for, and while it wasn’t necessarily a need, it was something I could immediately find use for, so I purchased it. Again, not completely going wants versus needs, but also making sure that there’s a purpose for my shopping.

How often do we go through our houses and look through our things, some that we’ve never used, and wonder, why do we even have this, why did we spend the money on it? You can try to resell and get some of your money back, but let’s face it, you’re still taking a loss. That’s why it’s so important, especially if you don’t just have endless money to spend, to really think about purchases to ensure you don’t get buyer’s regret or end up months later just giving it away to charity after never using/wearing it. So take a couple of beats, and really consider if you want this. Another trick is to walk away without it and if you are still thinking about it the next day or in a couple of days, then it’s not likely just an impulse buy. But if you’ve completely forgotten about it, then you didn’t really want it that badly after all.

Stop Looking Backwards

We all know how important it is to sit back, reflect, and look back at life choices and mistakes. That’s all well and good, until you get caught up looking backwards in life that you forget to look and move forward. I know a lot of people who are struggling with this, especially if they are not in an area they want to be, it’s hard for them to have hope for the future.

One of my friends is not happy in her job, it requires a lot of phone calls, which is not her jam, and is very taxing on her right now. I know someone else who is potentially in danger of lay-offs in the coming year. Then there are those who are still stuck on exes or who don’t really think life could be as good as it was 2 years ago. All of those issues are completely valid, but the only way to get through them is to stop looking backwards and start looking forward.

You know the story, A Christmas Carol? Super fitting at this point in time, but not just for the obvious reasons. So Scrooge gets visited by three ghosts, Christmas Past, Present, and Future. He needs these ghosts to show him what went wrong with his life. Now, he also needs them to show him that if he keeps looking back and not making any progress, he won’t change his future. But, if he looks towards the future, and makes changes, and starts moving forward each day, his future will change.

We can look back to learn from mistakes or see how we were in the past, but that’s it. We can’t go back in time and make changes, we have to start moving forward from where we are currently. So take a minute, and evaluate things. Are you happy where you are? Or do you want to make some changes? If you want things to change, you have to let go of what was in the past or learn to embrace it, and move forward. Moving forward is the only way to make changes and have all of those new and wonderful Christmas Futures.
