Earth Fare vs. Lucky’s Market

Hey ya’ll, so I am always looking for organic, healthy food options, at prices that don’t break the bank. Fortunately for me, I have a Lucky’s Market nearby, but it’s still a bit farther of a drive than I’d prefer, especially for something like groceries which, sadly, have to be shopped for around once a week, especially for fresh items like fruits and veggies. So, when it was announced that we were going to have an Earth Fare closer, I was super excited about it and decided to try it out. Well, unfortunately, I was rather disappointed with what I found.

The announcements for this chain were huge, and they were advertising amazing sales and prices, and all of the fun stuff that comes with a new store opening. Unfortunately, it ultimately fell flat from expectations. Like a good shopper, I looked online at the ads first, to get an idea of what I was shopping for, though I intended on browsing the whole store, and there was a lot that was left to be desired in the store, that was advertised online.

  • Prices. First off, the prices just weren’t that great at Earth Fare. Sure, they had some sale items, but most of it was full-priced, and some of it was even more expensive than Lucky’s, for the exact same item! Sorry, but being a little closer doesn’t make it worth spending a couple of bucks more. Lucky’s wins this round.
  • Expired food. Alright, so it’s a brand new store, so you expect a few things: cleanliness, lots of employees to help, and all fresh items. Which is why I was shocked when the yogurt I was looking at had expired back in December of 2018. Yup, right there on the container. And yes, I checked, it wasn’t just one, there were several. It took me a couple of minutes to track down an employee, and when I informed him of the situation, he pulled the products, but also acted like I was being super dramatic about it. Sorry, no, you could cause people to get sick, and part of your job is to ensure that anything expired has been pulled. You’d think that would have been it, but then when I was looking at the ice cream selection, I found the same issue. Expired, but this time back in November of 2018! Come on guys, this is just ridiculous, you are brand new, there is literally no excuse for this. Lucky’s, you win again.
  • Selection. This is where Earth Fare finally redeemed itself, the selection of specialty items was much better here than at Lucky’s, at least as far as last time I was there.
  • Meats. Lucky’s takes another win with much better prices and better looking meats. Sure, Earth Fare had some that looked good, but others looked discolored, which is concerning when it comes to purchasing meat. I’ve never had that issue with Lucky’s and have always gotten delicious meats there, and at low prices.

Overall, and I write this with total disappointment, Earth Fare just did not meet expectations. It was fairly busy, which is completely understandable, but that does not excuse some of the other larger issues (ahem, expired products) that were in the store. So, while it may be a bit of a farther drive, it seems that Lucky’s Market will continue to get my business over Earth Fare.
